It’s nearly impossible to imagine summers in Chicago without baseball. But the sport we know today has come a long way from its early years where it was hardly more than a passing fad. In the beginning, the baseball was seen as little more than a sideshow, and included leapfrogging to base, stopping runners with headlocks, and regular fist-fights. So how did baseball transform from “dirty ball” to the national pastime? Join author and journalist David Rapp and Leslie Heaphy, chair of the Women in Baseball Committee of the Society for American Baseball Research (SABR), as they take us through baseball’s turbulent history. They’ll explain how three players from very different backgrounds came together to form one of baseball’s most feared double plays and turned the Cubs into America’s team. They’ll tell stories of infatuated new fans, strange scoreboards, presidential visits, or novelty baseball songs that would put “Talkin’ Baseball” to shame. And they’ll spotlight the men and women that history often leaves behind.
